It is believed that Dhanyawadi was the first capital of the Rakhine Kingdom dated back to before the 8th century BE. It was associated with the ancient Indian Kingdom and older than any other kingdoms in Myanmar. Although the available historical evidence did not support this claim.

ธัญวดี คือเมืองหลวงแห่งแรกของอาณาจักรยะไข่ ย้อนกลับไปถึงสมัยพุทธกาลถึงพุทธศตวรรษที่ 8 โดยเชื่อมโยงกับอาณาจักรอินเดียโบราณ และเก่าแก่กว่าอาณาจักรอื่นๆในเมียนมา แม้หลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์ในยุคหลังจะไม่ยืนยันเช่นนั้น

However, the remains of the ancient city at the south of Mahamuni Temple had been excavated. There were many objects and images with the influence of ancient Indian art and Mahayana Buddhism.

Really glad to have a chance to visit here, to pay respect to the Holy Image and learn about the first capital of the Rakhine people, before moving on to the 4th one at Mrauk U.


ดีใจที่ได้มาแวะไหว้พระ และเรียนรู้เรื่องราวราชธานีแห่งแรกของชาวยะไข่ ก่อนจะเดินทางสู่ราชธานีแห่งที่ 4 ..มรัคอู ในอีกไม่ถึงชั่วโมงข้างหน้า

Breath ลมหายใจ

According to the legend, Lord Buddha and his disciples once came to this city of Dhanyawadi to spread Buddhism. Before he returned back to India, he gave the 'breath' to the Buddha Image, which was molded at that time as his symbol for people to worship. The image, Mahamuni Image, then became alive to continue teaching in his place until present.

ตามตำนานกล่าวว่า พระพุทธองค์และอรหันตสาวกจำนวนมาก เคยเดินทางมาที่เมืองธัญวดีแห่งนี้ เพื่อเผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนา เมื่อจะเสด็จกลับอินเดีย ได้ทรงมอบ 'ลมหายใจ' ให้กับพระพุทธรูปที่ชาวเมืองได้ร่วมกันสร้างขึ้นเป็นสัญญลักษณ์แทนพระองค์และกราบไหว้บูชา พระพุทธรูปองค์นั้น ก็คือ พระมหามุนี จึงมีชีวิต มีลมหายใจ เผยแพร่พระพุทธศาสนาแทนพระองค์ในดินแดนแห่งนี้ต่อไปมาถึงปัจจุบัน

I believe that this incredible legend is a kind of personification describing the Buddha teaching that was disseminated and flourish successfully in both Rakhine kingdom of the Kaladan River basin and Burmese kingdom of the Irrawaddy river basin.

The Dharma that still breaths and represents the Buddha until now.

ผมเชื่อว่า ตำนานที่ดูเหลือเชื่อนี้เป็นบุคลาธิษฐาน เปรียบเปรยพระธรรมคำสอนของพระพุทธเจ้าที่ถูกเผยแพร่มายังอาณาจักรในลุ่มน้ำกะลาดาง์ของยะไข่และลุ่มน้ำอิรวดีของพม่า จนพระพุทธศาสนางอกงามเจริญรุ่งเรืองในผืนดินนี้อย่างมั่นคง

พระธรรมที่ยังมีลมหายใจ และเป็นตัวแทนของพระพุทธองค์มาจนถึงปัจจุบัน

We did not go inside the main temple, then prostrated outside in front of the closed east gate.

เนื่องจากไม่ได้เข้าไปภายในพระวิหาร เราจึงต้องกราบพระกันตรงด้านนอก ตรงหน้าประตูฝั่งตะวันออกที่ปิดอยู่

Through the gate holes, we could see the replica of Amarapura Mahamuni Buddha Image that was in front on the left. We couldn't see the most revered Rakhine Mahamuni Image which was inside.

แล้วมองลอดช่องประตูเข้าไปภายใน ซึ่งยังพอมองเห็นองค์พระที่จำลองมาจากอมรปุระ ที่ตั้งอยู่ด้านหน้าทางซ้ายได้ แต่ไม่เห็นองค์สำคัญของยะไข่ ซึ่งอยู่ด้านใน

This reminded me of another doorway event three years ago at the Amarapura Mahamuni Temple outside Mandalay. That day I sat in front of the closed door as well, to wait for the open time.

ทำให้ย้อนนึกถึงเหตุการณ์ที่หน้าประตูอีกบานหนึ่งเมื่อสามปีก่อน ที่วิหารพระมหามัยมุนี อมรปุระ นอกเมืองมัณฑะเลย์ วันนั้นผมนั่งอยู่หน้าประตูที่ปิดอยู่เหมือนกัน เพื่อรอเวลาเปิด

According to Burmese history, the Mahamuni Image which was enshrined here in Dhanyawadi had been moved to Amarapura by King Bodawpaya after his army conquered Rakhine. But according to Rakhine history, the Image drowned in the river during transportation and never reached Burmese capital, the real image is still here. 

No matter what happened, I paid my deep respect to 'The Great Philosopher',  both in this temple and at the Mandalay suburb.

ตามประวัติศาสตร์พม่า พระมหามัยมุนีซึ่งเคยประดิษฐานอยู่ที่ธัญวดีแห่งนี้ ถูกพระเจ้าปะดุงอัญเชิญไปยังอมรปุระ นอกเมืองมัณฑะเลย์ในปัจจุบัน หลังจากตียะไข่ได้ แต่ประวัติศาสตร์ยะไข่ กล่าวว่า องค์พระจมน้ำไปในระหว่างพม่าเคลื่อนย้ายลงเรือ องค์พระจึงยังคงอยู่ไม่ไปไหน ยังอยู่ที่นี่

ไม่ว่าประวัติศาสตร์ไหนจะจริงหรือเท็จ ผมก้มกราบ 'พระผู้เป็นปราชญ์ที่ยิ่งใหญ่' ด้วยใจเคารพสูงสุด ทั้งที่มองไม่เห็นเบื้องหลังประตู ทั้งที่ชานเมืองมัณฑะเลย์

The temple is closed, no travellers, only the locals with security tasks.

The disadvantage of the wooden structure is its durability that required a good maintenance and regular restoration. This present temple dated back about 200 years old because the previous one was destroyed in fire.


จุดอ่อนของสิ่งก่อสร้างด้วยไม้ คือ ความคงทนถาวร ซึ่งต้องบูรณะปฏิสังขรณ์อย่างต่อเนื่อง พระวิหารหลังปัจจุบันนี้มีอายุประมาณ 200 ปี เนื่องจากหลังเก่าถูกไฟไหม้

The bus followed the northward route to Kyauktaw, then turned eastwardly across Kaladan River. The river is much narrow, but the bridge is almost half a kilometer long.


รถวิ่งขึ้นเหนือจนถึงเจาะอ์ตอง์ แล้วเปลี่ยนทิศมุ่งหน้ามาทางตะวันออก ขึ้นสะพานข้ามแม่น้ำกะลาดาง์ซึ่งช่วงนี้แคบลง แต่ตัวสะพานก็ยังยาว น่าจะเกือบครึ่งกม.

Not so long, we then saw a building in the blooming light high up on the nearby hilltop  ..Mahamuni Temple.


สักพักเราก็เห็นสิ่งก่อสร้างประดับไฟสว่างไสว สูงเด่นอยู่บนเนินเขาข้างทาง ..วิหารพระมหามุนี

This temple and many religious sites built on the hill or the highest point in that area implied the highest respect of the locals. Walking up to worship needs not just the physical strength and strong will, but also a good faith.

พระวิหารแห่งนี้ เหมือนกับสถานที่สำคัญทางศาสนาหลายแห่ง ซึ่งตั้งอยู่บนเนินเขา หรือจุดสูงสุดของพื้นที่แถบนั้น บ่งบอกถึกความเคารพสูงสุดของผู้คน การเดินทางขึ้นไปสักการะ ต้องอาศัยกำลังกาย กำลังใจ และแรงศรัทธา

Without knee problem, the downward walk was much easier, but if being absent-minded, may be easy to fall down. I often remind myself to be mindful and take time to review; do I feel calmer or better after those merit-makings? I found out that sometimes I felt more annoyed and unpleasant with what I've perceived up there.


Up with faith, down with insight.


ขาลง ไม่เหนื่อยและเดินง่ายกว่า ถ้าเข่ายังไม่เสื่อม แต่ก็อาจหกล้มหัวคะมำได้ง่าย ถ้าใจลอย ผมมักเตือนตัวเองบ่อยครั้งให้ใช้เวลาเดินลงทบทวนตัวเองว่า ได้อะไรจากการมาสักการะสถานที่ศักดิ์สิทธิ์แห่งนั้นบ้าง ทำบุญแล้วได้บุญมั้ย จิตใจโล่ง สงบขึ้นหรือเปล่า หลายครั้งกลับพบว่า บางทีก็หงุดหงิด ร้อนรุ่มขึ้นด้วยซ้ำ เพราะไปสัมผัสกับสิ่งที่ไม่พึงใจ


ขึ้นด้วยศรัทธา ลงด้วยปัญญา
